GARDENING WITH MUSHROOMS + MICROBES WORKSHOP

DATE: April 22nd, 2023

TIME: 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Join us in the Pope Valley for a hands-on mushroom + microbe cultivation workshop. In this class, we will learn how to partner with mycelium + microbes to grow beautiful gardens and healthy soil. We will discuss the wonders of the soil food web and the power of probiotics and fermentation in gardening. We will demonstrate the many practical and exciting ways to introduce fungi + microbes into your garden to help you grow nutrient-dense food + medicine.

Together, we will build outdoor mushroom beds and pathways on the Suscol Intertribal land. These mushroom gardens that we build together will produce amazing edible mushrooms for years to come! Participants will leave with the skills needed to start integrating the intelligence of the mushrooms and microbes into their own gardens. Everyone will take home some of our farm-made, microbial-fungal compost tea blend.

Workshop proceeds will be shared with Suscol Intertribal Council for the development of the “Suscol House” and property for the continuation of educational programs in the Napa Valley.

We will discuss bioremediation of land and water and the probiotic power of working with EM liquid cultures and microbial-fungal compost teas. We will demonstrate how to brew, grow, extend and apply custom compost teas for gardening, farming and restoration projects. In this hands-on workshop, we will share recipes and brew compost tea together for vegetative and bloom cycles proven to increase terpene profiles. Participants will take home some of our farm-made compost tea blend.

Join us on Wapato Island (Sauvie Island) to learn about the little microbe mudballs on a mission to clean and restore our water and Earth! Bokashi balls, or fermented mudballs, have been demonstrated to have a wide variety of regenerative applications, working as catalysts for restoring our environment by cleaning toxic waterways, improving soil health and supporting the expansion of existing mycelial networks. These mudballs have been successfully used around the world in bioremediation projects. We are honored to share this simple and efficient way of partnering with microbes and fungi with humans who want to clean soil and water. In this hands-on workshop, will will make microbe mudballs together, share recipes and discuss their practical uses in gardening, farming and restoration projects. Participants will take home a pound of fermented mudballs.

The absence of controlled fires traditionally used in indigenous land management practices has led to increasing occurrence and severity of wildfires in our bioregion. Working wisely with fire has many regenerative applications that are being researched and implemented globally. In this workshop, participants will learn how to convert biomass and burn piles into biochar soil amendments. We will discuss how to practically implement biochar’s diverse uses from small-scale garden projects, to farming applications, to large-scale restoration and land management. Participants will take home a pound of biochar.

Join Rae — fungi farmer, folk herbalist and registered nurse — in Abuela Tecolate Hall on Wapato Island Farm to learn about the medicine of mushrooms. In this class, we will explore the astounding healing powers of the fungal beings and learn how to connect with these regenerative masters through food and medicine to restore balance and health in our own lives. We will discuss the history and future of fungi as medicine. Let’s navigate unexplored fungal frontiers together and weave the future of fungal medicine through our curiosity and play. Bring questions and an open mind to this interactive workshop!

Sliding scale: $40-60 for 3 hour workshop. Proceeds from this event be contributed to the on-going project of building our farm’s Fungi Food Forest! Please contribute as you are able.

Growing Mushroom Garden Beds Workshop

Join Rae on Sauvie Island at Wapato Island Farm for a hands-on mushroom cultivation workshop. In this class, we will learn how to grow mushrooms in outdoor beds and discuss the many exciting ways to introduce fungi into your garden. Together, we will build a King Stropharia woodchip bed as an addition to our farm’s newest project — our Fungi Food Forest. Participants leave with mushroom spawn to start their own mushroom bed at home! This workshop will be held outdoors, so please dress accordingly.

Sliding scale payment option: $50-70 for 3 hour workshop. All proceeds go towards helping build our Fungi Food Forest. Please contribute as you are able.

Join Rae Hart of Ground Culture PDX and Jennifer Rose Marie Serna of Wapato Island Farm for a cozy evening and learn how to handcraft your own herbal syrups using farm-grown healing plants and mushrooms! Herbal syrups are a delicious way to support our immune systems and enjoy the medicine that the herbs, fungi and bees offer. In this class, we will get creative using the methods of folk herbalism and make mushroom and herbal syrups to help keep our bodies warm and well as the seasons change! Participants will leave with a bottle of herbal syrup made in class.

This workshop will be held outdoors, and we will be using power tools — so please dress accordingly!
